Mangochi South in JBFI demo games

Mangochi South Constituency on Sunday hosted demonstration games for the K100 million (about $250 000) Joyce Banda Foundation International (JBFI) Inter-constituency Football and Netball trophies.

The games, both netball and football, were meant for the sponsor to have an idea as to what would be happening during the games, according to the competition’s main organising committee chairperson Yusuf Matumula, who is also a legislator for Mangochi South.

The foundation gave out balls and cash to the teams that participated at the demonstration games. Matumula also gave out balls separately.

Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) executive secretary George Jana, who witnessed the games, said it was clear there is a lot of talent among the youth in the constituencies.

Jana said in an interview: “On football it was okay, but in netball, there is need of courses for the officiating officials. We need to train them to know and respect the rules. Even players need to know the rules.”

He said sports authorities would take advantage of the trophies as all constituencies in the country are supposed to participate.

Matumula said an announcement would be made when interested teams would register with his committee and one week would be reserved for that exercise.

He said the competition would prevent youths from promiscuity as they would be spending most of their free time on the games.

President Joyce Banda launched the trophies in Mzuzu in July.
