Army, Police teams dominate Gaffar Darts qualifiers

Army and police staff have contributed three teams each to the national finals of the Abdul Gaffar Darts Championships set for Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) this weekend.

During the regional finals last weekend, Malawi Defence Force teams Mafco, Combat and Kaning’ina made it into the grand finale while the Malawi Police Service teams White Eagles, Eagle Arrows and Mzuzu Police qualified for the 10-team plate.

White Eagles will represent the Southern Region alongside BSC and Poly CEC while Eagle Arrows and Balaka represent the Eastern Region. Mafco and Combat have filled the Central Region slots together with defending champions Capital Glass. Mzuzu Police and Kaning’ina will carry the Northern Region flag.

Army and police staff mostly dominate in football and athletics but it appears they are now on a campaign to excel in other sports disciplines as well, Darts Association of Malawi (DAM) vice president Duncan Karim observes.

“It seems they are now finding new sports avenues to terrorise and they have found darts as one of such boulevards. In the past few years, we could hardly see Army or Police darts teams crossing the qualifiers line,” Karim said.

During the Southern Region qualifiers at Moth Club in Blantyre on Saturday, BSC emerged on top with nine points from three-straight victories. White Eagles came second with four points as Poly CEC settled for the third-place with three points.
