Mapa defends itself on ‘South’ pool death

Malawi Pool Association (Mapa) has parried claims from some quarters that its indifference was contributing to the sport’s death in the Southern Region.

Davie Mallunga, a former tournament director for the South, and other clubs, said the region has not had a competitive event for about a year. He also claimed that the region lacks the backing of Mapa office-bearers who are too busy with politics and business.

While admitting to have been busy for three weeks, Thindwa blamed Malunga and other club officials for not using proper channels to communicate their concerns.

He said Mapa is not in charge of regional competitions.

Thindwa also wondered how other regions were able to get sponsorship for competitions.

On the continued postponement of elections in the South, he said Mapa wrote all regional chapters calling for the polls and save for the South, office-bearers were elected in all the other regions.

“First, the elections were postponed to pave the way for the AAPA Championship games we hosted last November. The idea was to give the games all the attention they deserved. A month after the games, Mapa set a new date, but the Northern and Eastern regions wrote Mapa asking it to change the dates to allow them conclude their regional leagues,” he explained.

Mapa has since reminded all clubs that registration for the Mapa national pool league ends in two weeks’ time. Registration for Mapa national individual championship is also underway.
