Flames coach Mario Marinica says he would love local fans to learn from their Mozambican counterparts in supporting their national team.

He said Mozambican fans rallied behind their team from the start in Sunday’s 2023 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) second leg final qualification at Estadio Nacionale do Zimpeto in Maputo which ended goalless for the Mambas to sail through on away goal rule.

Marinica: They carried their team through

The home crowd created an intimidating atmosphere for Malawi by supporting their team throughout the match.

He said: “I wish Malawians could learn something from the Mozambicans.

“They carried their team through and made the difference.

“They were indeed the 12th player for Mozambique and that’s how it ought to be.

“Local fans also have to be vocal and support their team no matter what.”

The coach also said there were approximately 41 000 fans which was  testimony of their bond with the team. They were absolutely fantastic.

“In contrast, we only had about 5 000 during the first leg at Bingu National Stadium (BNS),” said the Romanian.

Reacting to Marinica’s sentiments, self-proclaimed Flames chief supporter Yona Malunga said the coach had a point.

He said: “I agree with the coach that there are times when we hardly cheer our team and most of the times we are rooted to our seats which is unfortunate.

“Even when the chips are down, we need to support our team.

“But then, there are also times when local fans have been amazing.”

He cited the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Ethiopia at BNS which Malawi won 2-1.

The flamboyant fan also said they had plans to travel to Maputo, but were let down by lack of funds.

“We were ready with our drums and we approached FAM and some companies to assist us, but it didn’t work.

“We believe that had we gone there, we could have made a difference.”
