Silver set to hire Meck

Silver Strikers are courting former Flames coach Meck Mwase with the hope of hiring him as the club’s head coach.

The Central Bankers board vice-chairperson George Chiusiwa, who also heads the club’s technical sub-committee, and Mwase himself confirmed the talks yesterday.

Said Chiusiwa in an interview: “We are working at restructuring the technical set-up of our clubs and we have been talking to Meck and other coaches’ as well.

Confirmed: Mwase

“We currently do not have a head coach and several coaches were contacted.”

On Mwase’s current situation of having a running contract with government, he said: “That will now be up to him as a person to see how best he can handle it.”

On his part, Mwase said he was indeed approached by the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored side, but referred The Nation to his lawyer David Kanyenda for more details.

Kanyenda said: “He briefed me on Silver’s interest and we are exploring a number of options, including mutual termination of his contract.

“There is this legal quagmire regarding the court case and we are hoping to map the way forward in the shortest period.

“Meck is keen to move on with his career as a coach.”

Ironically, Mwase, who also had a stint with Silver as head coach about a decade ago, has another offer from e-Swatini top-flight league side Nsingazini Hotspurs for the post of head coach.

A source confided in The Nation that as part of the restructuring exercise, the Central Bankers have proposed Mwase as head coach of the senior team with Etson Kadenge Mwafulirwa and McDonald Yobe as first and second assistant coaches, Young Chimodzi Jnr as team manager and Victor Mphande as goalkeeper trainer.

The Area 47-based side has also proposed to retain Leo Mpulula as head coach for the reserve side with Rodrick Gonani and Dave Moya as his assistants and Lyton Mangani as goalkeeper trainer.

Green Harawa and Bothwell Saka are earmarked as co-coaches and Jack Chiona as team manager.

Mpulula is currently the senior team’s head coach in an acting capacity.

The Central Bankers fired Zambian tactician Daniel Kabwe as head coach, citing inconsistency in the performance of the club.

Football Association of Malawi executive committee relieved Mwase of his duties as national football coach in April this year and replaced him with Mario Marinica who was initially hired as technical director.

He was later redeployed as Under-23 national team, a position he turned down.

Mwase then sued FAM at Industrial Relations Court for unlawful redeployed and constructive dismissal.

Mwase also had a stint as Silver head coach about a decade ago.
