Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) television has said it is planning big for its viewers with plans underway to bring many new soaps licensed on pay television stations.

MBC Tv public relations and marketing officer Ruth Gama said in an email interview when commenting on speculations that the station has bought licence to beam popular soap programmes on Etv and SABC channels.

Etv and SABC channels have many soap programmes liked most by Malawians, but following their removal from the free to air decoders, many people have had no access to the programmes.

Gama said her office is targeting many programmes on the two channels including, some on other channels, but with largest followers on the continent.

She said the television station is bringing Scandal which is licensed to Etv and it will be joined by other soap programmes from other channels.

“MBC is always signing agreements to obtain rights for programme content for its audience and this being our new fiscal year, we are scouting for more programme content all over. Scandal is on our schedule and I can confirm that we have already obtained the rights to show it,” said Gama.

She also said that they have purchased many other programmes, but said she will reveal the details once the deals are sealed.

Gama said the programmes will include documentaries, wrestling, Rythm City and others.

“We know many people do not have access to paid channels and removal of Etv and SABC channels on free to air decoders recently, has affected many people. We are concerned about this and we want to bring back some of the exciting programmes by buying rights of the programmes and show them on our television,” she said.

Currently, MBC tv has rights to broadcast some sports programmes, Turning Point, Club 700 and BBC’s Focus On Africa.

Early this year, MBCtv through the initiative bought rights of Desperate Housewives, Army Wives and Greys Anatomy soaps among others.

  1. MBC if you have nothing to offer, just close shop. The mandate of the station is to inform, educate and entertain. Ask yourselves, is there anything in your programming that informs, entertains or educates us? It is simply politics, politics and politics. That station is funded by we, the tax payer. It is not funded by only PP supporters. We want to see all the politicians of various parties and opinions being featured in your programmes.
