The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and United Democratic Front (UDF) have reacted to gender activist Seodi White’s remarks that the two parties cannot win the country’s presidency in the forthcoming May 20 Tripartite Elections.

Speaking on Zodiak Broadcasting Station on Tuesday, White said the competition for the country’s presidency is between People’s Party (PP) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and that MCP and UDF cannot win the national leadership.

Said White: “The competition in the coming elections is between PP and DPP. The president for the country will come from one of these two parties. MCP and UDF cannot win the presidency. They will just win some parliamentary seats, not the presidency.”

But speaking in separate interviews with Weekend Nation, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila described White as misguided on her opinion while UDF’s Ken Ndanga said the activist’s opinion lacks scientific backing.

Kabwila said: “Seodi [White] is misguided on what she said. She has been around and she knows how the two political parties [PP and DPP] have plundered and frustrated this nation. The cashgate has not only tarnished PP’s image but also DPP because the revelations show that the looting started when DPP was in power. So, how come someone expects either of the two parties to win?

“MCP has been out of power for many years and it has seen how other parties have failed to develop the nation; hence, more people want to try us [MCP] this time.”

Ndanga said UDF is not shaken by White’s prediction.

“She [White] has not done any research to come up with her conclusion. As a party, we treat it as just an opinion. UDF will win the coming elections because we have not lost any elections since 1994,” he said.

  1. Thats wishful thinking Jesse. Just because PP and DPP have plundered and frustrated this nation then your party will win. You win because you have large followers. And MCP and UDF have the least followers. Unless you form an alliance with even Aford then you will at least have numbers. Being popular among your relatives and sisters (only Central region) can not cheat you are nationally popular. The people who make a party to win Malawi election come from Chitipa to Nsanje. A Jesse mudzikanda nchalatu. Zaka zingati MCP yakhala ili yotsutsa koma nthawi yonseyi kumati ndi chipani chachikulu, chokhazikika.

Seodi is very very very right. Politicians are very very very myopic.

  2. This Seodi White, very brave woman indeed. She is not afraid of anyone or anything; not even misogynous comments. How I wish there were more Seidis in Malawi! Too bad the correspondent did not ask her what was the (statistical) basis for her observations; in the absence of such, I can only trust her based on her record of being well informed. And she is not officially aligned to any party (unlike Kabwila now). Remember, she is not seeing eye to eye with the current president, and so if she was partisan, she could as well have just right ruled out PP. But no, she says it’s between PP and DPP! Now given the choice between these two parties, and in view of our experiences, especially in overall management of the economy, with the current regime, which party would a sensible voter select next May?

    1. Seodi can say that. Having crossed paths with JB she needs to find ways of mending the soured relationship with JB, that is how she should be considered. Winning elections is a game of numbers. Having a large gathering at a political rally does not mean you have a large following. People in the houses have several party clothes, you cannot tell who belongs to what party except for a few. Malawians like idling so any party function especially the president’s that takes place they will turn up to admire the convoy, enjoy the dances,

Going by numbers the south has registered 3.5 million, the centre 3.2 million, the north just over a 1 million. The vote in the south is for sharing between JB, PM, AM and Katsonga, how much these will get in the Centre and North will be seen on that day. RC stands a good chance of getting a good vote from the centre. Remember we are still regionalistic.

JB’s PP and PM’s DDP have plenty of skeletons in the cupboard, still fresh in the minds of Malawians. Only foolish people can forget too soon. The Cashgate is still lingering in the air with roots to DPP. I do not see any difference between PP and DPP they are all parties born out of frustrations, identical with their founders and relations. JB is just as arrogant as was B wa M. True or false? JB is worse she does not have time for office work all she knows are petty travels to install chiefs, distribute maize and cattle trying to win sympathy from the rural people, as she is doing that neglecting presidential government administrative tasks, the people in the government offices behind are busy looting the money.

Let me tell you one thing Kamuzu had time to sign cheques within his administrative office. Check with John or Chakuamba. He was reading each and every mail and putting on his remarks. A President is CEO of the Civil Service he/she must have time for government administration. JB is busy with PP issues. Do you see her travels to install chiefs, distribute cattle, and maize, attending funerals as government business? If you do then I doubt if you people know the job description of a president. But let me tell you people in the rural area are now jacked up, if only she could give a bag and cattle to all of them then she would woe them to vote for her. The cattle and maize she is distributing and the few houses she has built for a few people are only causing more resentment. After all money has been stolen at Capital, most Malawians are God fearing they would not want to receive what is perceived to be stolen. Jesus is about to come, thieves and those who delight in receiving stolen things will go to hell, that is what people believe.

By the way what business enables her to to be distributing millions of Kwacha’s every week? Ask accountants or economists even Bill gates would not do that, he would soon be bankrupt. Does Obama do that? Look at accounts for Banks in Malawi, they are the ones doing better in Malawi look at their profits, and imagine if they were to be giving out MK50 million every week what would happen?

Lastly do you believe Seodi will vote for JB? May be PM. Vote ili mumtima.

  3. The North registering over a million voters-no ways. Agaist a population of about 500,000. No ways.
