A football team of diplomats accredited to Malawi whacked a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) team 3-1 in a war veterans fundraising football match at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.

The fundraiser game curtain-raised a TNM Super League match between Silver Strikers and Azam Tigers.

The match was coordinated by British High Commission office in conjunction with the German Embassy.

In an interview after the match, British High Commissioner Michael Nevin said although the turnout was not big, he was satisfied that the objective was met.

“The turnout was not what we had expected, but we are happy that we have managed to honour our war veterans. We are yet to find out how much has been raised, but if there is a short fall, we will find other means of raising more money,” said Nevin.

The match was an imitation of the First World War December truce football match between the British and Germans.

Sulom vice-president Colonel Dan Kuwali, who was part of the event’s organising committee, described it as a success.
