Chiumia: Government has programmes for the youth

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Grace Chiumia has pledged to take to Parliament for deliberation the discussion of youth-related issues including those raised in the Malawi Youth Charter.

The minister made the assurance on Thursday at a stakeholders dinner organised by Youth Consultative Forum (YCF) with support from Plan Malawi.

Chiumia said Malawian youths have been neglected for a long time when it comes to allocating resources by the National Assembly.

“This meeting has come at the right time when Parliament is in session. I will present in the House some of the issues in the charter,” said the minister.

She added: “Government has already put in place a number of programmes to enhance youth participation such as the National Youth Development Service, establishment of new universities and innovative community colleges.”

YCF coordinator Edward Chileka Banda commended government’s commitments on welfare of the youth.

He, however, appealed for harmonisation of the programmes highlighted in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) manifesto and those in the National Youth Policy (NYP).

“We need to align youth programmes to national policies that are produced after reaching a consensus,” said Chileka Banda.

Some of the youthful parliamentarians who attended the meeting included Bon Kalindo, Ralph Jooma, Juliana Lunguzi and Victor Musowa.
