His body will not directly vote: Kanjala

The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) has refused to make public its preferred candidate among six presidential aspirants for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) elections on September 10 2013.

MOC president Oscar Kanjala said his body would not directly vote; hence, not necessary to choose among the candidates Ching-Kuo Wu, Dennis Osward, Ser Miang, Thomas Bach, Sergey Bubka and Richard Carrion.

“Only the executive board and IOC members attend and, therefore, have powers to vote. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) lobby with executives from these categories for the candidates of their choice,” said Kanjala.

Being among the NOCs, Kanjala’s MOC, therefore, can also lobby for a preferred candidate based on their campaign manifestos.

“Unfortunately, as late as beginning of May there were only two candidates. Over the past few weeks three more came on board and it has, therefore, been difficult for NOCs to come in and express their views. Finally, it is also unwise for NOCs to publicly express their choices for obvious reasons,” he insisted.

Meanwhile, it has transpired that none of the MOC members vied for the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) elections which took place during an annual general Assembly on June 13 in Ivory Coast.

Ivorian General Lassana Palento retained the presidency, Mustafa Berraf and Soda Costa Alegue Joad Manuel of Sao Tome and Principle were elected first and second vice-presidents respectively. Tommy Sithole got the seat of general secretary and Habu Ahmed as treasurer.
