Zimba: Extra cost will be much lower

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) has turned to South Africa as the next country for buying professional boxing belts after being frustrated by Chinese manufacturers.

MPBCB president Lonzoe Zimba said yesterday that they ordered 10 belts from a Chinese manufacturer at K3.5 million price, but they have been let down by the firm’s increase in the cost of the same by over K1 million.

“The Chinese company has given us an invoice that differs with our initial agreement, saying the paraphernalia is of high quality and that the new price tallies with the current foreign exchange rate.

“We feel that is too much considering that we will also require a lot of money to ship the equipment to Malawi. We, therefore, believe that we can still find the material of the same quality in South Africa, where the extra cost will be much lower,” said Zimba.

He, however, said he would use personal money to procure the equipment in South Africa as they await funding from WBC.
