MRA touts its export initiatives
Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says it has various initiatives that exporters can benefit from which are in tandem with government’s overall objective of turning into an exporting country.
In an interview, MRA head of corporate affairs Steven Kapoloma said to ensure that sustained and effective services are provided to the exports sector, the tax collecting agency has developed a fully fledged exports department under the Customs and Excise Division.
Figures from MRA show that the value for exports from macadamia nuts have increased to number three in June 2017 at $3.213 million (about K2.3 billion) from number six in September 2016 at $1.315 million (about K949 million).
Similarly, tea earnings were at number two in June 2017 with $7.434 million (about K5.4 billion) up from number three in September 2016 where it earned $3.845 million (about K2.7 billion).
Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) head of public private dialogue Hope Chavula is on record having said that the country’s export base is still being dominated by traditional agricultural exports.
