Museum stocks new exhibitions

After years of wearing the same face in its displays, the Museum of Malawi now wears a different face following the stocking of new animal exhibits.

For the past weeks, the museum has been accommodating international scientists to help them produce new animal exhibitions.

During the period, the three Scotish scientists helped the museum to make two impala animal exhibitions and Water bucks which were unveiled last week.

Speaking when unveiling the new exhibitions, museum education officer Aaron Maluwa said the new exhibits will help to attract people to visit the facility.

“It is our wish to make the museum more attractive with new exhibits, but we are let down by resources and skill. The museum has been wearing the same face for many years and we know most people want to visit the museum, but they cannot come several times when they know nothing new has been stocked,” he said, adding that there are plans to bring in more new exhibits to make the centre attractive.

Maluwa added that the main challenge the museum faces is science, which he says is the crucial part of the museum.

“Museum is not just about culture, science is the key component that is why we are busy looking for money to build a science centre.We want to have many new exhibitions and be able to preserve them for years.

“We have animal exhibits which were stocked in 1982 and we need to bring more and be able to preserve them for many years. Preserving animal exhibits involves use of chemicals and that is science. We hope government and the corporate world will join us to create the science centre,” said Maluwa.
