“A selected panel of judges has decided to give this coveted award of Lifetime Achiever to the composer of the country’s National Anthem, which has been Malawi’s heart and soul for the last 50 years. The award will be given to Michael-Fredrick Paul Sauka [1934 -1990] posthumously.

“He died on August 15 1990, and never got his deserved recognition for his contribution to the struggle for political and social emancipation through the arts. The Lifetime Achiever is the only category in the Annual Muma Awards, which unlike the rest of the categories is not put forward for public voting,” said Bright Sonani, Muma Awards public relations and communications manager.

This year’s edition has 15 categories, which are open for voting covering different genre and artists/groups that have made an impact on the local music scene in the 2014 season. Voting, which is only open to Airtel subscribers, still continues. To vote, just send an SMS with the keyword to 58411.

A full list of nominees and the voting codes can also be accessed on the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) Facebook page or the Muma website.

The second edition of the Muma Awards will be held at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on February 27.
