Muslim Association of Malawi clarifies JB donation
The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has clarified that the maize donation the association is receiving from the Presidential Initiative on Hunger and Poverty Reduction (PIHPR) does not mean there is a working relationship between the organisation and any political party.
Through PIHPR, President Joyce Banda has been giving MAM food aid for distribution to poor households across the country.
It was apparent, however, that some people interpreted the gesture to mean the association supports Banda’s candidature in the May 20 2014 presidential elections.
But in a media statement released this week, MAM chairperson Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad said the association is not siding with any candidate in the elections.
“MAM trusts that everyone will responsibly choose a leader who will rather be a servant than a master; who will not only listen to their problems, but also provide for their lasting solutions; who will be a able to consult them on national issues rather than adopting defunct dictatorial status of leadership; and one who will always be with them any situation,” reads the statement.
The association also urged Muslims to refrain from violence during the electoral period.
“I believe that Muslims will take note of this appeal and maintain discipline during the campaign period as well as the polling day. It’s not benefitting a true Malawian to hate or hurt others out of animosity derived from political differences,” adds Muhammad in the statement.
