Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika says he is scrutinising eight names for the position of his running mate in the 2014 presidential elections

Mutharika, who arrived in the country on Saturday from United States of America through Kamuzu International Airport and addressed party followers at Mgona in Area 25 in Lilongwe, did not disclose the names.

Speaking at the rally, Mutharika said he wants to give people a running mate who will be suitable for the presidency.

Said Mutharika: “I want to have a running mate who can help me in terms of developing this nation when I win elections on 20 May this year. I want a running mate who can take control of this nation in my absence. The position of running mate is very important, hence I will ensure that I have a reliable and productive running mate.”

Mutharika did not specify when he will unveil his running mate, but urged Malawians to be patient.

He dismissed reports that he went abroad to receive medical treatment.

Mutharika also assured the gathering that his United States green card will not affect his candidature and said he is ready to face courts on that.

“Green card is just a working permit which enables one to work in a foreign country. Therefore, there is nothing to worry about. Some people are just panicking and afraid of me because they know I will win as president the coming elections,” said Mutharika.
