People’s Party (PP) councillor for Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu City, Charles Nyirongo, has died after an earlier assault over his alleged involvement in a love affair with a divorced woman.

Northern Region Police Headquarters spokesperson Maurice Chapola said in an interview yesterday Nyirongo reportedly started dating the woman prior to the May 20 Tripartite Elections and her ex-husband, identified as Sangwani Chirambo, 48, from Gwazamo Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mtwalo in Mzimba, was getting jealous.

Police said Chirambo has been charged with murder contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.

According to Chapola, Chirambo caused havoc every time Nyirongo visited the house of his ex-wife, Berita Mbewe, 32, of Bindani Village, T/A Lundu in Blantyre.

He said on Wednesday night, the councillor visited the woman again and Chirambo sparked a fight in which Nyirongo was severely injured. He was rushed to the hospital where he died yesterday morning.

Chapola could not confirm the cause of Nyirongo’s death as a postmortem was yet to be conducted at Mzuzu Central Hospital.

However, Chirambo has been arrested following the death.

Nyirongo’s death shocked a number of people and some made fun of it considering the cause of the fight.

Notable personalities at his funeral included Mzuzu City Council chief executive officer Thomas Chirwa, Mzuzu City mayor William Mkandawire, his deputy and several councillors.

In his eulogy, Mkandawire said Mzuzu City Council had lost a person who could have contributed significantly to the development of the city.
