Nanzikambe celebrates 10 years

Blantyre-based Nanzikambe Arts Theatre has lined-up three performances to celebrate 10 years of existence.

Nanzikambe was founded in March, 2003. However, the group delayed the celebrations to later in the year to celebrate with fans in a festival style.

According to Nanzikambe’s Vincent Maluwa, the group will launch its anniversary celebrations on August 30, with the kick-off of the 2013 Mwezi Wawala Festival which will take place at Nanzikambe Arts Café for three days.

Maluwa said the group has lined-up three plays—The Blood Knot, Tales of a Tiger and The Messenger for the celebrations.

“We want to make it double, as we celebrate the third hosting of Mwezi Wawala Festival next week, it will be the beginning of our anniversary celebrations.”

During the decade, the group has run several projects, including the founding of the Nanzikambe Arts Café in Naperi and partnering with various international theatre groups such as Theater Konstanz of Germany to share skills.

Co-founded by leading practitioners, Kate Stafford, Melissah Eveleigh and Smith Likongwe, Nanzikambe has produced several plays which have been performed locally and abroad. Some of the plays are African Hamlet, Chilly Heart, A Garden of Plenty, African Macbeth, Eating to Live, Playing with Food, A Flea in Her Ear, African Dream, Little Prince, A Doll House, Freedom, Come Freedom Come, Accidental Death of Democracy, Demo, Parade, Nora’s Sisters, I will marry when I want and Aid Machinery.
