After almost three years in oblivion, the National Women Football team will go into camp on July 26 at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Blantyre ahead of an international friendly against either Zambia or Tanzania.

According to National Women Football Committee (NWFC) chairperson Severia Chalira, they have written a proposal to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) about their intentions to start rebuilding the national team.

“I will send the proposal to FAM today (yesterday). We want to build a strong team ahead of the 2016 African Women Football Championships qualifiers later this year and we need to have at least an international friendly prior to such crucial engagements,” she said.

According to Chalira, they have selected 36 players through the recent national select football bonanza in May, but it will depend on funding from   FAM to determine how many will be accommodated in camp and for how long.

She added that they have also proposed at least five individuals for the national team’s technical panel.

The national team went into a break from international contests in 2012 to pave the way for restructuring following embarrassing defeats during the Confederation of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup when it lost 8-2 to Zimbabwe and 5-1 to South Africa. n
