During the event, NBS Bank and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) also signed a three-year contract which will see the bank sponsoring the event up to 2026.

Last year, the bank also hiked the sponsorship package to from K15 million to K20 million.

He said: “Without doubt, the bank has continued to live by its noble motto of being a ‘caring bank’.

“The Charity Shield continues being an event that reaches out to those in need of help and NBS Bank is part of that success story.”

Last year, the proceeds from the event were channelled towards survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy which hit most districts of the Southern Region.

FAM divided the beneficiaries into four categories, namely, football legends, football coaches whose houses were damaged, football players and some families that were affected in Ntauchira Village, Traditional Authority Likoswe in Chiradzulu.

FCB Nyasa Bullets Reserves coach Enos Chatama, former Chitipa United coach McDonald Mtetemera and  Malawi National Beach Soccer team captain Sandram Saddi also got a similar amount each.

Over K23 million was used to construct low-cost houses for four families that that lost their houses to the storm in Chiradzulu and the family of Under-16 football player Mahara Mpoliwa, who lost his life in Chilobwe Township, Blantyre during the cyclone.

The remaining K1.9 million was used to buy groceries which were distributed to some affected families.

Gunda said this year the proceeds from the event will be used to promote sanitation in schools to be identified in the Central Region.

TNM Super League champions FCB Nyasa Bullets, who won all trophies last season, will clash with league runners-up Silver Strikers on March 30 in this year’s Charity Shield.
