Pool enthusiast Dave Lonjezo Mallunga ascended to the Southern Region Pool League (SRPL) chairpersonship in Blantyre on Saturday.

He replaced interim chairperson Enock Njiwa, who did not contest due to reported personal commitments.

Njiwa, who injected life into the sport within a few months of being thrown into the hot seat, had stepped in for Sam Phiri who left his position at the end of his tenure.

The new vice-chairperson is John Mwachande whereas Frank Chirambo is the general secretary deputised by Charles Kaunda. The new tournament director is Barnaba Kamwambi with the league’s purse being entrusted in the hands of Chinansi Lemani.

Mallunga wasted no time in promising to bring changes to the spot.

“We want to try and take the game away from drinking joints which become restrictive to the youth and women. We have also introduced a league to alternate with the one our mother body Malawi Pool Association (MPA) will be running,” Mallunga explained.

The SRPL is seen as the stronghold of pool in the country hence there were concerns when there was until June, inactivity in the region.
