United Kingdom-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) Bwengu Project has constructed a school block and rehabilitated six others at Ishalikila Primary School in Chitipa District.

Speaking on Monday during the handover of the new school block, Bwengu Project district coordinator Dickens Msukwa said they learned that some primary school blocks in the district were dilapidated.

He said: “We have also renovated learning structures at Namatubi, Chinunkha, Chendo and Meru primary schools. We also handed over desks to these schools.

“Our objective is to ensure that learners in Chitipa District have a conducive learning environment as dilapidated structures result in poor performance.”

One of the parents, Jonathan Nyondo, said a good learning environment motivates learners to work hard.

“As parents, we urge duty-bearers to consider repairing school structures in the district,” he said.

Chitipa district coordinating primary education adviser Howard Kayange commended the NGO for the initiative, saying it will improve infrastructure in the education sector.

He also appealed to other well-wishers to emulate the gesture set by Bwengu Project.

According to a Ministry of Education 2019 report, poor learning infrastructure and shortage of desks in schools are some of the factors that lead to dropouts.

There are 182 primary schools in the district.
