Ukhondo Services Foundation has donated 10 buckets of chlorine to Mlare and Lupembe health centres in Paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga District.

Speaking after the event on Monday, the organisation’s executive director Edgar Phiri said they want to complement government’s effort to contain the spread of cholera in the district.

“We want people to treat drinking water with chlorine to stay safe from cholera,” he said.

Mlare Health Centre in-charge Suzgika Shaba said the donation came at the right time because Mlare is one of the worst hit areas.

She said the facility has recorded 60 cases.

“The facility is facing a shortage of essential medical supplies such as soap, doxycycline, spirit and ringers lactate. We will distribute the chlorine to communities to protect them from the disease,” said Shaba.

Mlare Health Centre Management Committee chairperson Vyanangika Mkwala asked authorities to intensify awareness campaigns on cholera in the area.

“Traditional leaders should encourage their people to practise personal hygiene. People should know that cholera is preventable,” he said.

With funding from World Vision Malawi, Ukhondo Services Foundation is implementing water, sanitation and hygiene project in Lupembe-Mlare Area Programme in the district
