Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) Tingathe has drilled youths in Lilongwe in vocational skills.

Speaking on Thursday at Mvunguti Community Day Secondary School in Lilongwe, Tingathe programmes manager Tawonga Msowoya said they are running a Technical, Entrepreneurial, Vocational Education and Technical Authority advocacy programme to empower communities economically.

“We want to encourage young people to acquire vocational skills such as tailoring and carpentry to generate income and create jobs for others,” he said.

“So far, we have trained at least 60 learners,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Bridget Matewere, said she pursued a course in agriculture.

“I am confident that I can run a small farm and produce various crops. I can now make different types of manure,” she said.

Matewere encouraged fellow youths to acquire vocational skills, saying it is difficult to acquire formal employment these days.

Under the country’s long-term development plant, the Malawi 2063 the youth are encouraged to attain entrepreneurial and vocation skills to develop the country.
