The National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) has commended companies and organisations for supporting its programmes.

Nice Blantyre Urban district civic education officer Bowlanda Monjeza said this on Monday when Malswitch donated books and magazines to the organisation.

Malswitch business development and sales officer Harry Hackim said the books came from his organisation’s staff and library.

“Nice wants to promote the reading culture in the country and we are thankful to organisations, foreign and local, for their tireless efforts in assisting us with books,” said Monjeza.

He said Nice keeps a variety of books which benefit people across the country.

Monjeza disclosed that students from the Polytechnic are some of their clients.

JB donates K2 million to Chefo

Malawi President Joyce Banda on Wednesday donated K2 million (about $5 000) to Chewa Heritage Foundation (Chefo) to help the group prepare for Kulamba ceremony which will be held on August 31 2013 at Nkaika, Katete district in Zambia.

Apart from preparing for the event, the money will also help in transporting and feeding 137 chiefs who are expected to attend the event.

Making the donation at a dinner and dance fund-raising ceremony, Banda said she is aware of challenges Chefo is facing in preparing for the event and, therefore, decided to assist.

She described Kulamba as an important event that has helped unify people of Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique.

Banda then said considering the significance of the event, it would be unfortunate for Malawian chiefs to miss the ceremony because of lack of funds.
