The National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has asked the clergy to take an active role in promoting peace and stability during the campaign for the Tripartite Elections.

Nice district civic education officer for Zomba Albetina Nsongolo said this last week when the trust held a whistle-stop tour of the district.

Nsongolo said the clergy have an important role to play in promoting peace because they deal with people of different political backgrounds.

“The clergy live with the people. Therefore, your role in championing peace and coexistence during elections cannot be overemphasised,” she said.

Reverend Ndalakwanji of Khulubvi CCAP Church said the church is ready to take an active role in promoting peace among its members.

“You may wish to know that the Bible is against violence. Thus, we will teach our members to love one another despite belonging to different political parties because God is one,” said Ndalakwanji.

Imam Ali Makungwa of Makwinja Mosque also pledged support to initiatives aimed at bringing peace and coexistence during elections.

“I advise my fellow clergy not to turn the pulpit into tools for campaigning for their favourite parties,” said Makungwa.
