Nomadic woes
Mighty Wanderers yesterday suffered a second consecutive home defeat and first loss since losing Be Forward sponsorship as they went down 2-0 to Karonga United in a TNM Super League match.
With no fans to cheer or boo their opponents due to government’s of restrictions, on gatherings to 100 due to Covid-19, the Nomads appeared a casual side right from the start.
Sherrif Shamama was the hero of the day as his brace inspired Karonga to secure their first victory in six years.
Prior to the latest result, Karonga last beat the Lali Lubani outfit 2-1 in a league match in 2014 season.
The Nomads conceded the first goal as early as the 10th minute when Shamama capitalised on Babatunde Adepoju’s mistake to slot home a loose ball.
After that goal, he led numerous attacks on Wanderers goal, including hitting the crossbar, before eventually planting home his second in the 70th minute when the Nomads defenders were caught sleeping on the job.
The Nomads latest defeat comes two weeks after losing 1-0 to Mafco at the same venue.
“We played well on several occasions but our friends scored two goals and we lost. We accept the defeat,” said Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira.
“However, our overall performance was not a true reflection of our preparations ahead of this encounter. We lacked the killer instinct. We worked on the scoring aspect for the past two weeks but it seems things are not working for us. We will go back to the drawing board to rectify our mistakes. “
His Karonga United counterpart Dan Dzinkambani said he was happy that his side has recovered from a 2-1 home defeat to Civil Service United last week.
“I thank my charges for their hard-working spirit in this game. We planned to attack more and we did just that. It feels great to earn maximum points away,” he said.
Wanderers have now moved a single place down from 10th to 11th on the 16-team log-table with six points from six games. They have a win, three draws and two losses.
On the other hand, Karonga have moved up two places to seventh with 11 points from seven games; three wins, two draws and two losses.
In another crucial encounter in the commercial city, Red Lions moved back to the summit following a 2-1 triumph over fellow Malawi Defence Force (MDF) side Kamuzu Barracks at Mpira Stadium.
Lions have 17 points from eight matches while Silver Strikers, who thrashed Moyale Barracks 5-1 at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe to second with 16 points from eight games.
At Mzuzu Stadium, Ekwendeni Hammers hammered Mzuzu Warriors 3-0.
