Mighty Wanderers have said they are delighted with their arch-rivals Big Bullets exit from the K20 million (about $66 666) Carlsberg Cup, saying it gives them an edge in the race for ultimate Carlsberg sponsorship.

Wanderers general secretary David Kanyenda said they were delighted with Bullets’ exit.

“But we won’t be complacent,” said Kanyenda.

The Nomads beat Cobbe Barracks 5-0 in Balaka on Saturday.

They led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Gerald Phiri Jnr and Peter Mselema. The other goals came from Cuthbert Sinetre, new signings Mike Kaziputa and Diverson Chilemba.

So far, the two teams have won a cup each – Bullets won the Presidential Cup while the Nomads clinched the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy. Carlsberg Malawi senior brands manager [alcoholics] Twikale Chirwa said recently that the race for the sponsorship is still wide open as the two teams have to compete in the Carlsberg Cup and the TNM Super League.

The sky fell on Bullets on Saturday when they were booted out of the tournament by Mzuzu and Districts Football League (MDFL) Premier Division side Super Eagles.

Coincidentally, Bullets suffered the shock defeat when they were celebrating the Presidential Cup triumph at their Mandala clubhouse in Blantyre.

Karonga Vendors were another side that pulled a shock result when they edged Super League outfit Blantyre United 1-0. Green Msowoya scored the lone goal.

In other results: Silver Strikers 5 Support Battalion 1,  Civo United 1 Bvumbwe Research 0, Blue Eagles 2 Maicc 1, Moyale Barracks 3 Thondwe United 0, Mzuni 5 BNC Produsak 4.
