Nyasa Guruz in Mibawa showdown
Nyasa Guruz, the youthful music group that rocked the scene at the turn of the millennium, will this Friday perform live at Mibawa Multipurpose Hall in Limbe, five years since they last performed live.
When Mibawa posted on their Facebook page announcing the group’s performance, there were mixed reactions to the news with some saying they looked forward to seeing live Tumpale, Nthawi, Ukamalira and Fisi, some of the songs that propelled the NYG, as fans called them to fame. Others, however, felt the group would not rock the two-hour affair.
But the group’s leader Jones Kwangwani aka Pappa laughed it off, saying they were set to unleash the vibes to their fans’ satisfaction, not for competition.
“We have three albums to our name so we can perform for more than three hours. We had to trim other songs to fit into the two-hour TV slot. One thing we follow in music is that we don’t compete. We are not in music to prove to some people what we know,” he said.
The group last performed in 2018 at the College of Medicine Sports Complex, now Kamuzu Univesirty of Health Science. They have three albums to their credit: Nthawi released in 2006, Tikudikira in 2007 and Tabweranso produced in 2009. Their last release was the single Elube in 2021.
The Friday set will include Pappa, Blacjack, Badde, real name Mangaliso Mnyayi, and Jinte, real name Jimmy Kwangwani.
Meanwhile, Blakseed, Zep and Liko Bwai, who are either abroad or engaged with other local affairs, will not be available for the show.
Kwangwani hailed the Mibawa initiative, which streams the shows live on its Facebook page.
“It’s a very great initiative. It’s making it easier to reach out to all corners. Some people were being sidelined due to areas which are inaccessible by road, and also lack of venues to reach them so with streaming, everyone can see his or her favourite artist,” he said.
