Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander General Henry Odillo says the pension that war veterans receive monthly cannot be equated to the sacrifices they made in defending world peace during the world wars.

Speaking during a luncheon organised by the Bwaila Rotary Club on Sunday, Odillo said the veterans deserve more for their selfless dedication to duty.

“During the world wars these veterans showed real bravery, courage and dedication to duty in an unparalleled manner. They fought in difficult wars but what they get as pension today is peanuts,” he said.

Odillo asked well- wishers to come to the rescue of the veterans.

“As MDF, we will continue doing our part, but if there are well-wishers like the Bwaila Rotary Club then you are free to assist us,” said Odillo.

Incoming president of Bwaila Rotary Club, Hemant Tana, said they visited the veterans to show their appreciation for the role they played during the world wars.

“As rotarians, we are very happy to celebrate Christmas with the war veterans because of their sacrifices. We are very proud of the war veterans and what they achieved is a cause worthy celebrating,” said Tana.

Commonwealth Ex Service League of Malawi chairperson retired Major General Namwali thanked  the rotarians for the visit.

“We will never forget what you have done for us and this Christmas will always be in our memories,” said Namwali.

He also commended the Army Commander for flying the war veterans from Zomba.

According to Namwali, Lilongwe has two war veterans while Zomba has 25.

Apart from treating the war veterans to a luncheon, the rotarians also donated hampers to them.
