Warming the bench: Omegadinho

Mighty Wanderers wonderkid Omega ‘Omegadinho’ Mhone has been declared fit, but his featuring in the Nomads’ remaining seven TNM Super League fixtures is not automatic, coach Stuart Mbolembole has said.

Since his return two months ago from his home village in Chintheche, Nkhata Bay, where he was recuperating following a malaria attack, the 20-year-old Mhone has been recapturing his form in the Lali Lubani camp. He was on the bench when Mighty Wanderers drew 1-1 with Red Lions in Zomba last week.

Omegadinho set tongues wagging in the soccer fraternity during Wanderers’ encounters, including their opening Super League fixture against Epac at Kamuzu Stadium in April. He has captivating dribbling skills.

However, his fame went on a downward spiral a month later.

Ironically, after being featured in a game against Big Bullets, he suffered from a strange illness which the Nomads general secretary David Kanyenda reportedly described as a spell cast by Bullets.

Wanderers later apologised to Bullets for the insinuating remarks.

“I can confirm that Omega [Mhone] is now fit and ready for games. However, he has to work extra hard to compete for the right-wing position against Victor Mpinganjira and Abraham Kamwendo.

“Remember that we roped in Kamwendo from Blantyre United as Mhone’s replacement following his prolonged illness,” said Mbolembole.

“I am more than ready to get back to business. Once the coach decides to slot me into a competitive match, I will show that I am desperate to reclaim my position and I cannot wait for that moment,” said the Soche resident in Blantyre whose idol is the Flames and newly signed TP Mazembe star Joseph Kamwendo.

Omegadinho is Wanderers fans’ suitable likeness of former Big Bullets star Gabadinho Mhango.
