One dies, several injured in road accident in Blantyre
An unidentified woman has died and several others injured in a road accident this Saturday morning when a vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a ditch close to Chichiri Round-about along the Masauko-Chipembere Highway in Blantyre.
An eye-witness, Mphatso Kapeta, told Nation Online that the driver of a three-tonne Toyota Dyna, registration number NE1214, which was carrying over 50 people lost control of the vehicle after he failed to negotiate a corner at the round-about.
National police spokesperson James Kadadzera confirmed the accident, saying injured people have been referred to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where the body of the woman is also been kept.
He said details of the accident are sketchy since the police were still interrogating the driver who is currently their custody.
A CCAP reverend who rushed to the scene of the accident confirmed in an interview that the vehicle carried members from Mgonawambo CCAP in Nkando, Mulanje, and were heading to the Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) to participate in a choir festival.
“I cannot say much because I have just been sent to confirm if these people are really our members,” said the cleric who opted for anonymity.
