Osman faults FAM move on coaches

Seasoned coach Yasin Osman has faulted Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive committee’s consultation process to hire coaching panels for the national teams.

Osman, one of the experienced coaches on the domestic scene, was reacting to FAM executive committee’s resolution to consult stakeholders such as coaches, players, journalists and administrators before hiring coaching panels for national teams.

“The committee resolved that the technical sub-committee should consult widely including getting feedback from coaches, football players, sports journalists, football administrators, etc.

“It was agreed that the technical committee should meet next month and they will present a report to the next executive committee scheduled for early January 2014,” reads part of the statement signed by FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda.

But Osman argued that FAM should have been specific on the consultation process.

“I think the idea could be good, but just saying they will consult stakeholders is vague because people have different opinions on choice of coaches.

“What they should have done was to call for a meeting to discuss the issue in detail, whereby in the end, stakeholders would agree on which coaches should be considered for the senior team as well as all the junior teams [Unders 23, 20 and 17],” said Osman.

He also said the platform would give local coaches that have been involved with the senior team before a chance to share their challenges for possible solutions.

“Coaches need to be respected; otherwise, the present scenario whereby coaches are hired for one or two games without the necessary support is unfair,” said Osman who once took charge of the Flames in an interim capacity.

He also said not all local coaches have been tried and tested as claimed by FAM president Walter Nyamilandu.

During the recent meeting, FAM executive observed that there was no pressure at the moment to have the coaching panel in place considering that Malawi will only play its 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September 2014.

Some of the local coaches that have coached the Flames before include Kinnah, Osman, Jack Chamangwana, Young Chimodzi, Eddingtone Ng’onamo, John Kaputa and Alex Masanjala.
