Oxfam has handed over three cars worth over K140 million and motorcycles worth K16 million to its Peace project partners.

Speaking during the handover in Lilongwe on Friday, Oxfam country director Lingalireni Mihowa said the vehicles will be allocated to Salima, Lilongwe and Blantyre district councils to help them in disseminating clean energy solutions to rural communities.

She assured that Oxfam and other Promoting Equitable Access to Clean Energy (Peace) project partners are committed to supporting the government in addressing existing challenges that undermine equitable access to clean energy.

Mihowa said: “Access to clean energy can transform the lives of people, particularly those living in remote and underserved communities.

“So, these vehicles and motorcycles will help in facilitating the implementation of the Peace project and promoting clean energy.”

On his part, Ministry of Energy principal energy officer Austin Theu said the vehicles also represent a gateway to opportunity and a means to empower Oxfam and its partners to successfully deliver the project.

“These vehicles will be used to carry education and information on clean energy solutions to rural communities,” he said.

Peace project partner Civil Society Network on Climate Change (Cisonecc) national coordinator Julius Ng’oma said Oxfam has helped to solve their transportation challenges.

He said: “Since the project is being implemented in rural areas, it was hard to get to some areas; hence, the need for transportation.”

The European Union-funded Peace project is running in Lilongwe, Salima and Blantyre districts.

About 185 000 households are expected to benefit from the 1.3 million euro project. The EU has contributed 1.2 million euro while Oxfam has injected 133 333 euro.

Oxfam, Cisonecc and Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy are running the project for three and a half years
