Pay attention to the little ones

Listen to this article

On my way home earlier this week, I drove past a little girl dancing by the roadside. She couldn’t have been more than five years old. She wore teeny-weeny shorts and a little top. The time must have been six o’clock or thereabouts, because it was almost getting dark.

This girl had no adult supervision; after observing her for a few minutes I realised she was all alone. I wouldn’t have noticed her had it not been for her dancing, which was explicit, to say the least. She moved her flexible little bottom left and down, then got low all the way to the ground. Next, she worked her way up, licked her lips, touched her crotch and her chest (where her breasts will eventually be) then turned around, pointed her booty to the roadside and wriggled it profusely.

As a woman and a mother, I was flabbergasted, to say the least! I was also terrified for the little girl; blame it on too many negative stories in the media which make one think there are paedophiles lurking in every corner, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting children.

My first reaction was to look around at all the men passing by and pray that none of them would get any smart ideas. Next, I thought; where on earth did she learn all this? Possibly on television or perhaps from the people around her. (Children, after all, love imitating what they see going on around them, which is why adults always have to watch their behaviour and language around kids. For this reason, it is also important that the television parental guidance feature is utilised and viewing times are restricted.)

Question number two was; does her mother (if she has one); know that her daughter is capable of such? If she is, what has she done about it? My overall concern, though, was the fact that this child was all alone and drawing attention to herself along such a busy road at such an hour. Where was the person responsible for her? Anything could have happened; she could have been run over by a car, molested, trafficked; the possibilities are limitless. Careers, business and numerous other appointments often spell out busy schedules but I hope we make time to pay attention to our children, get to know what they are doing and make sure they are in check as much as possible.
