President-elect Peter Mutharika reacted to his victory just before midnight last night saying he shall work towards fulfilling people’s expectations and uniting the country.

Asked last night how he felt about the electoral results due to controversies of disputes, Mutharika said Malawi has many problems which will require collective efforts to deal with.

Said Mutharika: “We shall do our best as the Democratic Progressive Party [DPP] to work with everyone. I know we seemed to have voted on regional trends but there should not be North, Central and South.  We are one country, one people. We shall make sure we are united.”

Though it was late, there was jubilation and celebration in some townships in Blantyre and some parts of the country.

  1. The outcome of the election leaves me with a mixed feel. I am 100% sure that I wanted Joyce Banda out but I am not sure I wanted Peter Mutharika to win. I have doubts he is the right person to deal with corruption considering that his late brother, Bingu wa Mutharika allegedly store billions. Same applies to Atupele, whose father’s case is still in court (by the way it’s about the courts concluded that case- the tax payers’ money is being wasted). For Joyce Banda, the alleged involvement of her family members led me to believe she was only trying to appear to be doing something but it would have yielded nothing. Another issue I had with Joyce Banda is that she tried to take advantage of rural people’s depravity for personal gain. I have come to believe that PP created hunger so that Joyce Banda could go around and distribute maize and appear a very caring President. By the way whose money was used to buy the maize?

So it’s obvious I wanted Lazarus Chakwera to win but since Peter Mutharika won, I will accept the results and pray and hope that Peter realizes that about 63% of the voters did not vote for him. It’s his job to convince all of us by pursuing policies that will develop this country. I beg you to seriously deal with the corruption in government for the sake of the people in the rural areas.

God bless and guide our president, Professor Peter Mutharika and vice president, Saulos Chilima.
