PlaySoccer Malawi celebrated Christmas with young athletes in Blantyre’s Ndirande Township. They gave out snacks worth K150 000 to 400 blossoming stars within their fold at Makata Primary School.
According to PlaySoccer Malawi programmes manager Silas Liwindo, most of the youngsters who received biscuits and Kamba puffs come from poor families.
“Most parents of these children  struggle to find money for survival. As such, it is difficult for them to have extra money for their children this festive period and we thought it wise to give the children these snacks,” said Liwindo.
One of the youths, Samuel Banda, said he was happy to be among the children that received the snacks.
The 10-year-old boy said: “I stay with my mother and two brothers. During last year’s Christmas, we could not celebrate because our mum could not afford to buy us snacks, but today, we are happy with what PlaySoccer has done.”
PlaySoccer was founded by American Judie Mcpherson in 2006 as a tool to help children learn life skills such as hygiene through football. Currently, the organisation provides soccer lessons to 200 male and 200 female children in age groups of under-eight to under-15 years. n
