Poll tips JB to win vote

Listen to this article

Incumbent President Joyce Banda, who is leading People’s Party (PP) in the May 20 Tripartite Elections, has been tipped to win the forthcoming presidential elections, according to a latest opinion poll conducted by Research Tech Consultants.

According to the poll, the President commands a double-digit lead of 19 percentage points against her closest rival Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) Lazarus Chakwera.

Banda is also 20 points ahead of Democratic Progress Party (DPP) candidate Peter Mutharika.

The poll found that Banda was preferred by 1 609 respondents, representing 42 percent of the sample trailed by Chakwera with 23 percent, then Mutharika at 22 percent and Atupele at 10 percent of the national sample while “other presidential candidates” got 172 respondents or four percent.

The poll has an overall statistical margin of error of plus/minus 3.6 percent, according to a statement from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.

Research Tech Consultants, which has offices in Lilongwe as well as India and is currently evaluating upcoming elections in South Africa, India, Malawi and Mozambique, said Banda’s team only needs to do more to improve the PP brand and track record to sustain its momentum three weeks before votes are cast.

Conducted nationwide, the survey says many eligible voters believe Banda would win the polls because she has ended fuel shortages, managed the foreign exchange lean period with some success, reduced power blackouts and increased access to electricity among rural people as well as the prevailing good tobacco prices at the auction floors.

The survey’s lead consultant, Thomas Odala, said a sample size of 3 883 respondents was used in the poll.

He said the sample was assigned to the regions and districts based on the population of the 2008 Population and Housing Census.

Reads in part Research Tech’s findings: “In the Southern Region, out of 1 750 respondents in 15 districts [after Blantyre and Zomba were split into city and rural respectively], 805 respondents said they would vote for Dr Joyce Banda, representing 46 percent; followed by Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika [DPP] with 577 respondents, representing 33 percent; Austin Atupele Muluzi [United Democratic Front (UDF)] with 262 respondents, representing 15 percent then Dr Lazarus Chakwera [Malawi Congress Party (MCP)] with 70 respondents, representing four percent.”

Odala said in the Central Region (where the number of sampled districts was also put at 10 after Lilongwe was split into urban and rural), Chakwera has a 42 percent lead followed by Banda at 37 percent whereas Mutharika comes third with 14 percent and Atupele with six percent.

In the Northern Region, according to Odala, Banda led with 41 percent, leaving 21 percent of the respondents saying they will vote for other presidential candidates and 19 percent indicating preference for Chakwera.

“On the other hand, except for Karonga and Chitipa which seem to have a heart for DPP, the performance of DPP is rather weak in the [Northern] region as reflected in [Mutharika] getting 14 percent [of the vote]. Austin Atupele Muluzi comes in fifth in the region at five percent,” he said.

Odala said it is important to note that Northern Region voters have taken a wait-and-see attitude and the region has many undecided voters; hence, any party can take advantage of that situation to woo the voters.

Constitution law expert Edge Kanyongolo, who is associate professor of law at the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College, said it is difficult to comment on opinion polls unless one is informed on the precise methodology used.

Earlier this year, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) based in London also tipped Banda to win the presidential race on the back of her incumbency status, albeit with a narrow margin.

At the weekend, Al Jazeera also published an opinion poll that hinted at a Banda victory in an election analysts have rated to be the most closely fought in Malawi.

  1. The recent opinion poll results is not only good news for us but also encouraging.
We are vindicated, we have said it time and again that H.E. Dr. Joyce Banda is going to win the forthcoming tripartite elections with a resounding majority votes.
Malawians are convinced with the leadership of H.E. Dr. Joyce Bandas leadership, within a very short period she has managed to transform this country economically, politically and socially.

Peoples Party has a very strong candidate in the name of Dr. Joyce Banda.

  2. Mr Msonda, let us wait and see, for 2oth My is nigh. Why would Ministry of Civic education has to do with providing finer details of the surveys? Aren’t these people the ones we were told that they were moving up and down getting people’s opinions on elections and they told people that they are had blessings from state house to conduct/cook the opinion polls? Whatever the results, the person to occupy the State house will have a lot of pressure to deliver and if he/she fails the masses will not just watch. We are tired of irresponsible governments!!

  3. The Research Tech Consultants are but a sham…Please Nation you need to be verifying the authenticity of the so called opinion polls.Simple google search shows that firm is charade. There is no statistical basis on the sampling frame used by the so called firm.We need more information on the firm otherwise staged opinion polls are another form of rigging.Give Malawians chance to choose their preferred candidate

  4. The poll is definitely wrong because JB is going to win by more than 50% of the vote. Keep this page handy.

  5. I really thought Nation Malawi was big enough to carry out its own opinion poll and write a story about it. I was wrong! Just another Nyasatimes masquerading as Nation Malawi. How pathetic.

  6. Where can Banda get 37% in the central region? What has she done to get those vote in the center? Even Bingu is more popular there than Banda. The so-called Al Jazeera opinion poll never existed! They published their article based on Nyasatimes poll and EIU! Come on guys! You can do better than this for sure! Thats Edge Kanyongolo for u! You cant drug him into your mud!

  7. The Malawi Nation should give the name(s) of sponsoring or research tech Consultant, 2. Date of survey, 3. Target population and the sampling method, 4. Sample size, response rate, margin of error, and 5. The exact wording of the questions………..Otherwise we will not allow Malawi Nation to be misinforming the masses with bogus opinion polls.

  8. joyce banda doesnt even have a stronghold to start from.i dont see how such a person is going to win elections.the three other main candidates are better off than her.

  9. Losers always grumble. To the opposition, start preparing for a grand alliance in 2019 to present a credible challenge. If not you shall continue to feel the PHENI!!!!! Vote yanga ndiya Amayi sindingabese

  10. Not suprising results as PP has presence in most Districts across the country, namely, Nsanje,Chikwawa,Zomba,Mangochi,Balaka,Blantyre,Mwanza,Ntcheu,Salima,Kasungu,Nkhotakota,Lilongwe and all the 6 Districts in the North so just going by the mentioned Districts PP is already ahead.

  11. Only those in denial will dispute these poll opinion results. Joyce Banda will win the elections because Malawians believe in her. May 20 will be a confirmation.

  12. How do u expect a dividend opposition win an election?
I am not a politician but will vote during the 20th May elections and truth is I will vote for Joyce Banda because I don’t see the opposition divided as it is to win this election. Joyce Banda is going to win with over50% votes.
I don’t like PP Publicity Secretary Ken Msonda’s comments in defending his party and it’s leadership, he exaggerates too much (msonda kukokomeza, samavomereza PP ikalakwa) but on this one I totally agree with Ken “come what May, JB is winning with a resounding majority votes.

  13. JB is winning this election she is always on the road campaigning using public resources whilst the opposition is divided and busy talking about occupying state house.
How do you win such heavily contested elections when you don’t go out to address meetings.
Koma musonda pp ikazangoluza zisankho azathawa, he has too much confidence in JB.
Musonda Linda muziti apite ndiye muziti mwadala

  14. As much as this opinion poll is questionable, I don’t see a divided opposition win this election.
The problem with our politicians in Malawi is that they are all big headed, each one thinks can win an election and be head of state, selfish motive has not benefited ordinary poor villagers.
I wouldn’t be surprised in PP wins this election, chifukwa cha kupusa ndi kuzikonda kwa otsutsa
