Project hailed for improving soil fertility
National Local Government Finance Committee has commended Kalola Catchment Area extension workers in Senior Chief Wasambo in Karonga District for restoring soil fertility which has improved food production in the area.
Under the World Bank-funded Climate Smart Public Works Programme, communities are applying manure and planting vetiver grass to check soil erosion and restore soil fertility.

The committee’s board chairperson Richard Chapweteka expressed the sentiments on Thursday after inspecting interventions in the area.
He said: “If the country is to restore its lost food production glory, then there is need to mitigate effects of climate change that have hit arming hard.
“Ruvuwu Soil Fertility Improvement Project will help to improve food security because farmers will produce enough for food and for sale.”
Wasambo community development assistant Blessings Bunaya said the interventions will boost cassava and maize production.
Village head Mwakhwawa commended government for the project, saying they did not know how to restore soil fertility and protect forest reserves.
Karonga District Council chairperson Isaac Kalambo urged the committee to monitor the council’s funded projects to provide checks and balances that will lead to their effective implementation.
National Local Government Finance Committee Karonga district liaison officer Geoffrey Ntengula said13 123 people will benefit from the Climate Smart Public Works Programme in the district.
