Red Lions FC wound up their 2014 TNM Super League preseason with a resounding 6-0 win over former football players (also known as the Veterans), in a match played at Zomba Community Centre ground on Saturday.

The match, which attracted low patronage due to chilly weather, was organised to raise money to support ailing former Azam Tigers coach Leo Mpulula and former Mighty Wanderers midfielder Sherry Msuku.

“These games will enable us to get funds to support former football players who have nothing to fall after contributing a lot to Malawi football. We hope to raise about K1.2 million and we know it is not an easy task,” said Mussa Sanudi who is general secretary of Sportsmen’s Association of Malawi.

The match started on a low note with both sides weighing attacking options. But it was the soldiers who settled down more quickly and pressed for the opener in the seventh minute. Vilipo Mhango’s cross from the right found unmarked David Gulaimfa who connected the ball past badly positioned Christopher Jana in goals.

Mhango added the second with a fine finish inside the goal area before Boniface Kaulesi made it 3-0 with a simple lob. Half-time scores were 3-0.

The veterans came into the second-half with renewed purpose. Thom Milanzie, Lawrence Mnenula and Clement Mandala gelled well in midfield. They fed good balls to strikers John Gondwe and Yohane Fulaye, but Lions’ defence of James Chirwa and Chikondi Sanudi stood firm.

Substitute Willard John scored two quick goals before Khumbo Mkandawire wrapped up the scoring spree with a fine shot.
