Traditional leaders in Nsanje have said that public debates can play a critical role in the consolidation of good governance and the promotion of transparency and accountability in political leadership.

Group village head (GVH) Namanya made the observation at Masenjere Primary School on Sunday at a public debate the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust organised to enable the electorate to interact with candidates vying for various positions in the May 20 Tripartite Elections.

The debate also saw aspiring legislators for Nsanje South Constituency presenting their manifestos to the people.

Namanya, who spoke on behalf of 20 other chiefs, said public debates have helped people make informed choices ahead of the elections.

“Through these debates, we have known the development agenda of each candidate. This has enabled us to make proper decisions as to who we should vote for on May 20,” he said.

Namanya also disclosed that the debates will play a pivotal role in mobilising the electorate to actively participate in the electoral processes to increase voter turnout.

Nsanje district civic education officer Kondwani Malunga said his organisation has embarked on the debates to allow aspirants to showcase their manifestos.

Malunga said Nice Trust also wants to foster coexistence among supporters and candidates.

“Coexistence is very critical in achieving free and fair and credible election. I believe that this coexistence will remain among us whether it’s polling period or not,” he said.
