Refs want fans, players drilled in football rules

National Football Referees Committee (NFRC) has appealed to FAM to drill players and fans in football rules before the kick-off of every competition.

NFRC general secretary Chris Kalichero made the request following recent alleged attacks on referees by a fan and players.

Fransisco Scova abandoned a Presidential Cup round of 16 match between Ntelo FC and Chinangwa Madrid in Mwanza about two weeks ago after he was slapped by a supporter whereas Grace Msiska was beaten by Ntopwa Super Queens players during the Southern Region Presidential Women Football semi-final against Blantyre Zero in Blantyre last week.

Both referees were accused of biased officiation.

However, while attributing the occurrences to lack of adequate security at football venues, Kalichero said there is need for Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to educate players and fans on football rules.

“Most players and fans are fond of attacking our referees because they are not conversant with the latest rules of the game. Soccer rules have evolved over time and many people are not aware of this,” he said.

“We are, therefore, appealing to FAM to be conducting seminars for football fanatics on this at the start of every tournament. It would be great if this initiative started at district level.”

But FAM president Walter Nyamilandu told Nation on Sunday on Saturday that such an initiative would not be effective because most football fans, especially in the rural areas, are illiterate.

“First, let me condemn the behaviour of some players and fans that attack referees. It is savagery to beat up referees in modern football.

“On the referees’ committee request, I would say it would be a tall order to educate soccer fans on football rules as their literacy levels and understanding of issues are different. However, I urge competitions’ organising subcommittees, who are responsible for providing security at matches, to ensure referees are protected,” said Nyamilandu.
