Religious leaders have advised the new government on how it should tackle the issue of homosexuality if it arises.

Reverend Brian Kamwendo, senior clerk for Nkhoma Synod said Malawi needs to be within the blessing of the God given network with other nations.

“According to the Bible, homosexuality is detestable. ‘Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable (Leviticus 18:22). Biblically, homosexuality is against God’s strategic plan of marriage,” said Kamwendo.

He added that same sex marriages are the degradation of the body.

“This is detrimental to our society!” (Romans 1:26-27).

He said It will therefore, be wise for the president to plead with donors in good faith to give us room and indulgence to revere the sovereign ruler of the universe in this sensitive matter.

Kamwendo reminded the government that “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 33:12).

Sheikh Imran Shareef, lecture at Chancellor College and former general secretary of the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) says Malawi as a God-fearing country cannot tolerate homosexuality because it knows its dangers.

“It is no longer a secret that God punished Sodom and Gomorrah because of practising homosexuality and as a country we should not even dare to dance the tune of donors on the matter.

“I know our president is a religious woman and that she will do what’s best for Malawi,” said Shareef.
