The Scottish government and CBM, in partnership with Strathclyde University from Scotland, has rolled out a project in which it is supporting Montfort College’s efforts of increasing access to and quality of education of children with disabilities.

Speaking during a planning meeting held at the college’s campus in Nguludi, Chiradzulu, Malawi’s CBM country representative Stefan Dofel underlined that the project will not just improve the technical infrastructure of resource centres for special needs education attached to mainstream schools, as well as the performance monitoring systems of teachers.

“The project will also work closely work with local communities to strengthen early child development, and interact with the education system of Malawi,” he said.

He added that the project, through its objectives, will largely contribute to the realisation of the provisions of the Special Needs Education Policy and the Disability Act of 2012.

Principal of Montfort College, Lazarus Thomu, commended CBM and the Scottish government for the support.

Total funding for the project over a period of three years is £395 192 (K237 million).

CBM is a leading international disability and development organisation and has been working in Malawi since 1971.
