The Nsejjere Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) Premier Division two-horse title race is set for a breathtaking finish following leaders FC Surestream’s 1-2 loss to Mangochi Police on Sunday in Mangochi.

Frank Steveens’ last-minute strike not only ended steamrolling Surestream’s unbeaten run in the second round, but also blew the race open as only four points now separate the academy and second-placed Cobbe Barracks.

In a contest that shredded the nerves of a sizeable turnout that included Mangochi Police officer-in-charge Elija Kachikuwo, a frenzied late assault earned the Mangochi cops a deserved but seemingly unlikely win when Steveens pounced on a loose ball to strike the winner.

“Surestream are a good side who are leading the table, and to score a winner that has ended their unbeaten run in the second round gives me a lot of satisfaction,” said Steveens.

The hosts surged ahead in the 34th minute when Aliya Nyondo headed the ball home from a corner kick and Surestream woke up from their slumber and created a plethora of chances, but failed to make them count.

As desperation took its toll, Surestream breathed a sigh of relief when they were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute following a handball by Wilson Mbuta. Bernard Chimaimba coolly converted.

Led by Bernard Mwahimba, Mangochi Police fought to reclaim the lead and their efforts paid.

With six games each to wind up the season, Surestream still lead the table with 92 points while Cobbe who beat Prison United 2-1 on Saturday are second with 88 points. Max Bullets are third on 85 points.

Surestream technical director Peter Mponda said despite the loss, he was impressed with his charges’ performance.
