Sulom holds first ex-co meeting

Newly-elected Super League of Malawi ( Sulom) executive committee on Saturday held its first meeting in Blantyre where it resolved to renegotiate with FAM on the Mpira TV deal.

Sulom is a partner in the Mpira TV deal in which Mibawa Studios produce content, notably TNM Super League matches, for the television which is on Zuku platform.

The decision to engage Football Association of Malawi (FAM) follows clubs’ concerns that they have been given a raw deal since the lion’s share of the proceeds goes to content producers and broadcasters.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda confirmed the development in an  interview yesterday.

Banda: Clubs raised concerns

He said: “The first executive committee meeting was successful.

“The meeting discussed pressing issues and a timeline has been drawn to tackle them.”

The move to engage FAM on the Mpira deal comes after clubs noted that out of last year’s K123 million revenue, K61 million went to hosts producer and broadcaster, leaving FAM, Sulom and clubs to share the K62 million. Out of the K62 million, each club got K1.5 million.

The meeting also resolved that Sulom should hold an extraordinary annual general meeting (EAGM) before the league kicks off.

Banda said: “The EAGM will be held before kick -off to finalise the outstanding issues from the recent AGM such as presentation and adopting the audited accounts which was not done.”

Sulom also plans to beef up the secretariat by recruiting three officers.

Banda said: “We will recruit the three officers at the secretariat by April 1.

“We will also finalise the appointments to subcommittees.”

“The meeting also adopted the approved FAM calendar with total adherence to international Fifa calendar dates.

Meanwhile, players registration is expected to start from March 13 to April 7.

Sulom is also expected to amend the league’s rules and regulations before the season kicks off, according to Banda.

He said: “Fixtures will also be done by end March subject to results of the grounds’ inspection.

“We also resolved to pay referees outstanding dues before March 15.”

Soccer analyst Charles Nyirenda applauded the new executive for moving in to tackle the pressing issues before kick off.

He said: “It’s good that the new executive means business. They have no time to waste. Mind you, expectations are high.”

The Fleetwood Haiya-led executive was elected in office on February 25.
