Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has cleared the air surrounding relegation procedure for this season, saying it will maintain 15 teams next season.

Sulom general secretary Williams Banda on Friday said despite the league’s general assembly’s decision to increase the number of teams from 15 to 16, it cannot be applied retrogressively.

This means that three teams will be relegated and similarly three teams from the regional leagues will be promoted.

“The rules stipulate that three teams shall be relegated and another three teams shall be promoted.

“The changes will only be affected next season when the rules and regulations are adopted, they cannot be applied retrogressively,” said Banda.

He added: “We hope this puts to rest the uncertainity over relegation and promotion.”

The development comes as a blow to some relegation-threatened teams who were hoping that only two teams would be relegated, giving them a chance to remain in the top-flight league.

As of Friday the three bottom teams were Airborne Rangers (13th), Epac (14th) and Fisd Wizards (15th).

Rangers had 25 points from 26 games, Epac have 24 points from 26 games while Wizards have 21 points from 25 games. n
