Suspected thugs early yesterday descended on Area 23 Police Unit in Lilongwe and set it on fire, mercilessly beating up sergeant Mlotha who is currently admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH).

The attack on the Area 23 Police Unit followed the beating of three police personnel  who were manning Bua Roadblock on Saturday.

police2National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo confirmed both incidents—the Bua and Area 23 attacks. She said it was unfortunate that police officials are being attacked for no apparent reason.

Said Manjolo:”It is true that Area 23 Police Unit has been burnt by thugs who injured one officer in the process. This officer sustained deep cuts on the head, back and his left arm has a fracture. Three of our officers at Bua Roadblock were also beaten last Saturday and we are now more alert so that we get to the bottom of the matter.”

According to Manjolo, the thugs at Bua Roadblock hacked sergeant Luka Nangantani and broke both his arms.

They also hacked on the foreheads constables Watson Mwalilino and Lazarus Mazengera, who has 10 stitches on the forehead.

Besides the cops, the thugs also beat a forestry official, Alex Nyirongo,  leaving him with a deep cut on the forehead and the right arm.

Manjolo appealed to the public to provide information which may lead to the arrest of the thugs. n
