Thugs snatch K12.3m in Blantyre
Armed robbers in Blantyre on Monday snatched K12.3 million (about $3 750) from a businessperson running one of the Engen Limited service stations, as he was making his way into a bank, accompanied by his employee.
The businessperson, running the Kandodo Corner shop service station, made special arrangements earlier to bank with National Bank of Malawi’s (NBM) Henderson Street Service Centre on Easter Monday, being a public holiday.
He drove to the bank accompanied by his employee.
Southern Region Police Headquarters spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said immediately the two disembarked from the car, and as they were making their way into the bank housed in the NBM’s new head office complex, they were confronted by the four-man armed gang.
Gondwa said: “The town was relatively quiet, being a public holiday.
“One of the robbers opened fire into the arm of one carrying the carton that contained the money, the employee, and a bullet ripped off his skin.
“He dropped the carton and the robbers picked it and rushed back to their waiting car, with no number plates, and they sped off.” he said
Gondwa said no arrests have been made so far, but investigations were under way. He said the two were not accompanied by police.
