Tionge Hango promotes music in the North
Us-based Malawian musician Tionge Hango says he is determined to promote music and arts in the country as one way of giving back to society for supporting his career for years.
He made the remarks after launching Northern Region Music competition in Mzuzu at the weekend.
“The music competition starts in the Northern Region, but will spread to the other two regions. I want to thank Malawians for their support,” said Hango.
Hango, who was recently conferred with a Music Director Award by University of Salford for coming top in music studies in a class of over 180 students, has performed in various countries, including Denmark, South Korea, United States of America, Scotland, United Kingdom and Sweden.
“Most artists from the Northern Region lack the platform and support to do well in their careers despite being talented. This competition is one sure way of making their dreams come true,” he said.
Hango said he is planning a follow-up competition in April.
“I am hoping that by then we will have the corporate world joining and supports us as we promote art in the region as well as the other regions,” he said.
During the launch, contestants competed in gospel and secular music categories.
In the gospel music category, Pastor Moffat Phiri emerged winner. He was followed by Ruth Gee while New Era Band and Matope CYF tied on third position.
In the secular category, Mzuzu-based reggae band Finger-prints emerged winners followed by Orange Groove Band.
Commenting on the development, Afro-jazz musician Sam Shaba commended Hango for coming up with the competition.
He said: “When I heard of the competition, I was overjoyed though I didn’t know who came up with the great idea. Competitions help in discovering and exposing talent. As you might know, there are many talented people out there, but may not have the platform to showcase their talent.
“The competition has also fuelled the spirit of young and upcoming musicians seeing that their talent can be rewarded, and that there are people out there who do appreciate their talents and most importantly the competition has created a platform where artists will be able to learn from each other.” The launch of the competition was spiced up with performances by Ril B and Driemo.
